The San Diego Chinese Attorneys Association (SDCAA), together with the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (PALSD), recently co-hosted the special event “Conversation with Asian American Judges: On Legal Career, Dispute Resolution, and Legal AI” at the San Diego County Bar Association. The event brought together attorneys, law students, and legal professionals for an inspiring and thoughtful dialogue with two distinguished Asian American judges with extensive judicial and courtroom experience. The discussion drew strong engagement from attendees and fostered a sincere, reflective, and highly meaningful atmosphere.

Both judges shared personal and candid stories about their journeys—from early aspirations in the legal profession to eventually taking the bench. Drawing from their own experiences, they discussed how legal professionals can identify their strengths, develop professional confidence, and shape an authentic presence in practice. The event also highlighted challenges that Asian American attorneys may face early in their careers, including moments of feeling particularly “visible” or “invisible,” and how they can build resilience and a distinctive professional style through courtroom advocacy, communication, and self-positioning.

From the perspective of dispute resolution and courtroom practice, the judges offered practical observations on what distinguishes an outstanding attorney. They emphasized that exceptional litigators not only possess strong legal knowledge, but also demonstrate clarity and discipline in organizing facts, narrowing key issues, presenting evidence, and communicating effectively with the court. The judges encouraged young attorneys to develop strong writing skills, logical reasoning, and the ability to present cases with structure and precision—while keeping in mind what judges truly look for during hearings and trials.

As a key highlight of the event, the discussion also addressed the rapidly evolving topic of Legal AI. The judges shared their perspectives on AI’s potential to improve efficiency in the legal system, including its value in legal research, document organization, and increasing access to legal services. At the same time, they cautioned legal professionals to remain vigilant about the risks associated with AI, such as accuracy concerns, unreliable citations, privacy and compliance issues, and the non-delegable professional responsibility lawyers must uphold when using AI tools. Both judges agreed that AI may reshape legal practice in the next five to ten years; however, strong lawyering will continue to be grounded in sound professional judgment, ethical responsibility, and rigorous attention to facts and evidence.

SDCAA sincerely thanks both judges for their generous insights and PALSD for its strong support in making this event possible. This “Conversation with Asian American Judges” was not only a discussion about career development and emerging technology, but also a meaningful exchange on identity, advocacy, growth, and professional responsibility. SDCAA looks forward to continuing collaboration with community partners to create more high-quality programs that strengthen connections and support the growth of Chinese and Asian American legal communities in San Diego.
